Full-Time Workers in Your Home: Are You Covered?

by Colleen Woods-Esposito

Who Works for You?

Are you currently employing or planning to employ a full-time worker on your property, such as an au pair, caretaker, home health aide, or any other type of domestic service employee? If so, you may need to update your home insurance policy to cover a full-time worker.

Who’s Covered?

While New Jersey homeowner’s policies cover workers’ compensation claims for the part-time or occasional worker in your home or anywhere else on your property—such as a babysitter or landscaper—they generally do not cover full-time employees.

The Law

According to the state of New Jersey, if a person is employed in your home on a full-time basis—whether they live in your home or not—you must ensure that your homeowner’s coverage reflects the full-time exposure. Failure to do so can result in your insurer denying a workplace injury suffered by your employee.

The Cost

The cost of amending your policy is generally less than $100 per year, which is far less than a stand-alone workers’ compensation policy would cost.
